45: Timing is Everything

Nate awoke with a start and sat straight up in bed. What the hell? ... Bitch! he thought, thinking of Marge. She knocked me out again! He looked out at the window. Nightfall had occurred. Gabriella! he thought suddenly, then he screamed a torturous cry.
"No!!! Oh God no!!!" he yelled, and he balled up his hands into fists as rage consumed him.
Marge came dashing into the room when she heard Nate's cry. Nate looked up at her with a furious expression.

"You bitch!" he cried as he flung himself at her. "You let this happen! You stopped me from saving her!"
"I stopped you from suicide." Marge spoke as calmly as she could manage.
"Fuck you! I couldn't sit here and do nothing! Then you knock me unconscious and allow her to be raped!" His voice broke as he said, "She's pregnant! And they've tortured her!" He flung her to the side, causing her body to slam into the adjoining wall before he ran out of the room. He dodged her attack as he almost flew out of the house.
I'll kill them all. Each and every one will die a painfully slow death, he thought as the realization hit that Gabriella carried multiples and that her gestation period had been drastically and very painfully reduced. I will not share with Derek the knowledge that the 'meeting' will be a waste of time. Why should I tell him? He's done nothing but prevent me from leaving to save her. He continued to race through the woods in the direction he knew Hidden Springs to be.

"Your plan will not work." he heard his maker say to him from where they both now stood on a mountaintop.
"Why should you even care, August?" Nate asked.
"Obviously this was supposed to happen, and your part to play in this hasn't arrived. You will see your love again, rest assured."
"Yes, while she lays dying in my arms."

Gus's voice sounded a little peeved as he said, "I do not believe she will die. You shouldn't either. Have a little faith in yourself and your abilities!"
"My abilities." he said in a scoffing manner. "My abilities are worthless when up against my 'sister'! Your little pet made it so that her daughter could be raped, impregnated, and tortured!"
Gus gasped. "So, Tanner has finally achieved it. I suppose Katharine allowed it with her as her surrogate."
Nate looked at him in confusion. "Tanner? This was Julian's doing. The torture is Tanner's fault, but the pregnancy is Julian's idea."
Gus laughed, making Nate incensed. "Oh my!" Gus said with a huge grin on his face. "Tanner has his beta going behind his back with his own scheme! Oh, I love it!"
"Fuck off, August." Nate said with disgust that his maker could be so happy about Gabriella's condition.
"My, my. Language, Nathaniel." he lightly scolded him like a parent would a disobedient child.
"I cannot let her just remain with them. I must do something." Nate spoke his thoughts aloud while he stared at the granite beneath his feet, ignoring Gus and getting back to the more important matter at hand.
"Ever impetuous." Gus said with a tsk noise following. "You cannot just go charging into battle this time. Yes, I understand your want to rescue her, but you have to be smart about this. Pick the time and place to your advantage."
"So, you're going to stop me as well?"

"Me? No." he chuckled to himself. "I am choosing merely to observe. I am most curious of this turn of events and how I may benefit from it. Two of my enemies going head-to-head in the not too distant future. This shall be quite a show."
"If Derek is your enemy, why send your best weapon to aid him?" Nate asked, deciding he may as well get a little information from his irritating maker while he was around.
"I'm not worried over my Marge, and I will not reveal all of my secrets, Nathaniel."
"Stay away from Gabby." Nate growled, knowing she was part of the 'secrets' that Gus kept from him. That, and she couldn't stay out of his thoughts for more than two seconds.
Gus smiled. "Now, you know that's not going to happen, so why threaten me?"
Nate ignored him again. He had other things to worry about ... like how he would get into that compound. She thinks I've tuned her out! After everything, she actually believes that I'd close my mind to her! he thought incredulously. There must be a way to her.
"I wouldn't recommend going any further, Nathaniel." Gus said because he could sense Nate's desire for flight. "This pack is more powerful, and they won't give a fig about your respect for human life. They've always got sentries on duty scouring these hills."
"Then let them find my scent. I want them to know I'm stalking and looking for a way in." Nate responded with venom in his voice.

"So that Tanner will increase his forces? Complete and total surprise is your best option. Derek knows this, and he's had him as an opponent for a long time."
"I cannot allow that bastard to sit there and try to comfort her. I want to rip his head off ... right after I castrate him."
August laughed probably a little louder than the situation warranted. "So, after all these years, I finally see the solider I wanted, and all it took was a woman." He walked up to Nate and clapped him on the back like an old friend. "Wait, my son, and you just might get your chance."
"Derek wants to attack at the full moon." Nate said almost at random, his thoughts flying from one topic to the next as he desperately sought a way to rescue the woman he loved.
"Yes, of course he does. That's why I sent Marge. She wanted to help, and I'd rather the .. forgive the pun ... underdog weaken his opponent." His teeth shown in the moonlight as he smiled a wicked smile at Nate.
Nate turned to his maker to ask, "What do you have against Tanner? And for that matter, Derek?"
"That is none of your concern." Gus answered quickly and stiffly, his smile fading immediately as his arm fell off of Nate's shoulder.
"There has to be a way inside."
"And if you get in, what then?"
"I kill Julian, get her, and get out."
"It cannot be done alone. You must wait for Derek's decision."
"That, I can't do. You don't have to help me, August. I'm going to free her."
"Suit yourself then. Don't say I didn't warn you. Just remember you're no good to anyone dead."
      "I'm already dead, remember?"
Gus growled and rolled his eyes. "Don't start that again." Then he left Nate standing alone on the mountaintop.

------------------------------------------

Gabriella found herself curled up in Julian's arms as they both sat on the bed. She'd not been aware of the goings on around her after Katharine and Tanner left the room because she had mentally escaped somewhere deep inside herself to maintain her sanity.
She wiggled in his arms and lifted her head. "No, let me go! Leave me alone! Stop it!" she ordered as she pushed against him.
"Shh," Julian said as he held her firmly, "Kitten, calm down. It's okay now. They're gone."
"Okay? You have a twisted sense of 'okay'. I said let me -- Ah!" she cried as she tried harder to move away from him when pain suddenly struck every joint she moved.
Julian easily pulled her close again as she started crying. He held her to him and rocked her a little as he stroked her hair and face. Her tears wrenched at his heart. "Shh, I know it's not really okay, but they're not going to mess with you anymore."
"No, just you are." she sniffed.
"I promise I will never again harm you in any way." he said as he cradled her in his arms. "I can't go against Tanner's commands, but he's assured me he won't bother you."
        "And you believe him?"
"No, not really, but I have to try to."
Deciding to drop the topic of Tanner, she cried, "I hurt everywhere! Why? Why me? Make the pain stop."
"Rest." he offered as a solution. "Stay right here and just rest." He lightly encouraged her to curl into him and rest her head on his shoulder like she'd had it earlier.

Exhausted, Gabby didn't feel like fighting him. She already knew he wouldn't hurt her again from her visions, so she obeyed his wishes and let him hold her. He slowly and gently rocked her as he sang a quiet song in a language she didn't understand. The sound of his deep voice mixed in with his heartbeat relaxed her, and she soon fell asleep.

  1. Nathaniel is loosing his cool. He is too emotional at this point and I don't think that he will do well on a full attack. I don't think that Gus will be really helpful though, and his detachment may cause any of his actions to be too late. Ugh what a mess. Julian's trying to be all nice nice, too late. He's going to have a painful end once/if Nathaniel gets him.

    1. He certainly is. He's exactly what Derek feared would happen. Derek is worried Nate will alert Tanner to an imminent attack, making him more than ready to respond to a surprise attack. Honestly, I don't know what he's worried about. Tanner is always ready, but that's another can of worms.

Gus cares about Gus. If there's another person out there that he might care a little about it's Marge, but he attributes that to her gift. He doesn't want Nate to die, but that's mostly so he might be able to keep Gabby in line possibly. Plus, he enjoys riling Nate up.

Julian... oh boy. He's trying to fight his own self-loathing. He hates what he did, but if he had the chance to change it, he'd do it again. He wants children. He does have a faint hope that he can make a new life with Gabriella, but he realizes that that probably won't happen. He's worried about all this 'I'm going to die' stuff coming from Gabriella.

If he and Nate ever meet... that'll be ugly.

  2. I agree with Zhippidy, Nate is way too emotional to think clearly, he won't be able to make a proper rescue plan, and that may be his downfall.

There is something wrong with Julian. Somehow he seems to think he stands a chance with Gabby, and he seems to have forgotton that he's the one who raped her. Maybe he doesn't realise how awful that kind of situation is? There is something not right in his head though. You can't rape someone and then the next day act like you love them :/

I am glad that Nate is no longer unconcious though, maybe he will work well under pressure and be able to help Gabby, but that still doesn't change the fact that she is pregnant, and it's going to go by fast. What ever effects that has won't be any different if she's somewhere else. And she can rest safe in the knowledge that she must go home at some point to change her dress or her vision would be wrong.

    1. Nate is running around like a loose cannon, and having been in artillery, he should know. He's a danger to himself, Gabriella, and everyone else that wants to free her. The one thing slowing him down is that he can't come up with a good enough plan.

Julian hates himself. Like I said above, still, if he had to choose whether or not to do it again, he'd do it again. He realizes from figuring out that Gabby is psychic that she probably won't stay with him, but he vainly hopes anyway. He thinks he can make the awful situation better.

hehe, I wondered if anyone would wonder about the dress. To Gabby, that's the end if she sees it. She got rid of the one she owned, but she knows that that won't stop fate.

      Thanks for reading!

  3. Yeah Nate needs to be smart about this, if running in is sure to get him hurt or even worse killed then he has to think of a better plan. Although I can understand his anger, I mean they raped the woman he loves AND then got her pregnant. It can't get much worse than that.

Julian is crazy. It's just crazy to see him trying to be so gentle and caring to her for what he as done and the situation he has put her into. I don't really like the guy at all...at all.

So I'm rooting for Nate to think of something and hopefully he knows he can't do this alone!

    1. Nate is desperately trying to come up with a working plan, and he's failing miserably. Real miserably. This is his worst nightmare (a nightmare he actually had that night Gabby spent in the hotel minus the pregnant part so I guess worse than his worst nightmare is more accurate).

Julian doesn't like himself either. He thinks he can turn the bad situation, that he helped create, into a better one. He worries about Gabby saying she's going to die.
Thing about Julian that I haven't mentioned yet. That monster is inside of him... the one that Tanner likes so much that he made him his beta. It's like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Nate won't give up, and he doesn't want to go back to Derek's for a few reasons: 1- Marge might knock him out again, 2- Derek wouldn't help him immediately like he wanted.

      Thanks for reading and commenting!

  4. I never thought the day would come when I'd empathize with Nate, but in this update, seeing how torn he is, my heart goes out to him. That's as far as I'm willing to go though. I hope he calms down long enough to think things through clearly before he launches his attack, otherwise it might just end up messy.

Very disappointed with Marge, maybe she didn't know, but her actions contributed to Gabby's torture. Something for her to ponder the next time she feels like playing with her magic.

As for the Julian/Gabby relationship, it sickens me. How can she allow him to hold her (I get that he's not going to hurt her), but shit, the man raped her and she still allows herself to relax in his arms? WTH?

    1. Oooo, you really dislike Nate, don't you? :/ I say dislike because at least you can still find sympathy for him. So, there's hope!
Yes, he's torn. Perfect word for how he feels. He Knows he can't do it alone, but he's racking his brain trying to figure out a way to do it anyway... and doing it in a place where he has to watch his every move. Gus is right. There's sentries to worry about.

I am too. All she could think was 'stick with the plan... Nate is interfering with the plan, and he's trying to kill us all'. Then, what I didn't mention is that the humanity in her is torn to shreds with the realization that Nate is correct. It's partially her fault now. Others may try to convince her otherwise, but she'll forever think that in the back of her mind. I'm glad you mentioned Marge because I'm not sure I'm going to work in what she's feeling even though I know. Hm, I can work it in. As usual, you got my wheels turning. :) Also, that was one hell of a way to find out she's going to be a grandmother.

Julian is sick. Like I told Aeon, it's like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He wants to have a family.. the family he felt he lost when Rob killed Charlotte. What he doesn't understand is that he can't force that upon Gabriella. Charlotte loved him -- even the evil part of him.

Gabriella is losing it, and she's trying her hardest to keep it together. Her attitude right now is pick her battles, and she didn't feel like fighting at that moment. In a way, she felt she deserved to be comforted from the horrible man that held her as a bit of payback. Weird, yeah, and I'm having a hard time grasping that myself! (which is really really weird since she's coming out of my head) That, and she's still a bit mad at Nate for not saving her. She knows that her resting her head on Julian's shoulder will infuriate him... if he's still listening.

Oh yeah, another thing... remember, Gabby wondered why Nate wasn't in her visions of her pregnant life at the compound. ijs

      Thanks for commenting, Val!

  5. I feel for Nate too. It's so frustrating to know someone you love is in trouble, and everything is conspiring to not let you help. Still, he needs to cool down before he rushes in. Marge is right, it won't do Gabby any good for him to just get killed.
I was thinking Gabriela might be getting a bit of Stockholm syndrome, starting to feel sympathy for her captors, feeling like she's become one of them. Well,Julian anyway, not the rest of them. But I can see that happening in her situation.

    1. Nate is in a bad way. You're exactly right. Nothing is working for him, but he's desperate to do something. He's bound to get himself killed or hurt if he doesn't control himself.

Exactly. That's exactly what's happening to Gabriella, and I couldn't think of the term earlier today. She's trying to cope, and deciding to just 'go with it' seems to be the best option for her. It's certainly better than screaming and fighting all the time she thinks.

      Thanks for reading!

  6. I finally got to reading this.

It looks like Nate will never learn that acting out emotionally won't solve anything. I'm afraid he's about to make a bad situation worse and moving things closer to the vision coming true.

Julian is pretty twisted to think he could ever have anything with Gabby after what he's done to her.

    1. Yeah, that's just how Nate is, especially when it involves Gabriella. I think he knows the possibility that he's furthering events to cause the vision to happen, but he just can't help it.

Julian hates himself for what he's done to Gabby and for what he allowed to happen as well. He hopes he can just make it all better and get what he wants (children) to boot. I wonder how he'll react when Gabriella tells him there's more than one.

      Thanks for reading, jb!

  7. I can just feel Nate's fury when he realized what had happened to Gabby and that she thought he had given up on her. It must be painful for Marge too knowing what Gabby is going through, but she is just wanting Gabby to do everything she can to survive. Just like she herself is doing with Gus.

I hope that Nate doesn't do anything that makes the situation worse. He's not thinking clearly right now, although his feelings are understandable.

Poor Gabby! I hope she can regain her strength!

    1. I'm glad you understand Marge's thoughts. No, she's not happy at all about what's happened to Gabriella, but she wants her to survive... exactly, yes, like she's doing with Gus. :)

      Nate is a loose cannon.

Gabby just needs to rest. She'll regain her physical strength. Emotional strength may be another story.
