Clear my mind. Clear my mind. Clear my mind.
Of course, she would ask that question. She didn't trust me to tell her everything? I guess I would gloss over the details a little. Why scare her any more than she already is?
See, 'Gus'? She's confused. Geez, you did an awful job by bouncing around all over the place. Answer the questions as she asks them! Stop trying to sound so intelligent by giving her too much information to process. She can't keep up.
I'm not even supposed to be hearing this. How in hell am I supposed to clear my mind? How does one think about nothing? In order to think about nothing you have to think about thinking about nothing, therefore you've failed before you started.
There have been times where her mind is actually just background noise. Maybe that's how I'll deal with it. It doesn't look like it's going away, but I can try to get used to it.
Nathaniel got up when he heard his stallion nicker.
"Hey there, Reggie." Nate crooned to his friend.
"Apples?" the horse thought to him.
"Oh? You want apples? I might have some somewhere around here." Nate answered his purebred friesian.
"There you go, buddy." he said as he came back with the desired apple. He loved Reggie's calm but active demeanor. He'd always loved this breed.
"Run?"
"Not tonight, I'm afraid. I'm supposed to be trying not to think, and I need to be close just in case too." He often wondered how Reggie understood him. It was already bizarre enough that he could hear animals' thoughts, but how they understood him was a mystery.
"Desi." he heard the stallion think, talking about the mare in the next stall. There was much longing for the horse in the thought of her name. Nate had hoped to let the two mate, but Desi was proving to not like the idea. She'd bit Reggie on more than one occasion, but still Reggie kept trying.
"I know how you feel. Though I can't complain about being bitten. Maybe by words, though." he said and inwardly chuckled at the thought of tiny spacecraft run by little viruses.
Nate gasped when he realized what August wanted from Gabby right then. NO. Why are you doing this to her? You sick bastard! I did not bring her here to have you work on improving her ability! She hates...
He gasped as he shared another vision. They now knew what was going to happen moments before the other vision of the two of them.
Now now now. Why isn't now fast enough?
He made it in time to catch Gabby before she ran out of the room. Perhaps out of the room would've been a better idea, but Nate also needed to confront August.
Gabby couldn't stop shaking. She gratefully allowed Nate to hold her to him. He was the safe vampire, if such a thing existed, not this monster behind her. Don't let him touch me. Don't let him touch me! she thought frantically to him. Her thoughts strangely sounded like whispers like she couldn't even get an internal voice to be louder.
"What were you thinking?!" she heard Nate accuse Gus. Nate's arms tightened around her protectively in response to her request. He smells like leather. And.. something else. She distracted herself by trying to figure out what that something else was.
"I'm curious about her ability. And I was right! She can bring on visions at will!" Gus gleefully exulted.
Gabriella began to pull away from Nate. "I've got to get out of here." she whispered to him.
"Gabby, I'm sorry whatever it was that you saw was terrifying. Perhaps if you thought about something more mundane. That was a mistake asking you to think of that night." Gus tried to make amends and convince her to stay. Gabriella ignored him.
Suddenly, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She answered it, and realized it was the county hospital calling. Her sister had been mugged and beaten and was in intensive care. They expected her to make a full recovery, but she was asking for Gabby.
"I'll drive you." Nate offered. Gabby mutely nodded.

Sorry so short. Between this scene and the next this is the best breaking point, and if I'd included the next bit with this one the post could've easily gotten out of control. ;)
